A wholesome diet and regular exercise regimen are important components of a healthy lifestyle, but they are not always adequate in the fight against fat. Because of the important influence of our genetic backgrounds, we may not always be able to achieve the appearance we want even with a healthy diet and rigorous exercise. Many of us have parts of our body that remain nagging sources of dissatisfaction despite countless sit-ups and miles run. Eliminating excess fat on the arms, lower abdomen, buttocks, hips and
thighs may seem impossible. Weight loss or pregnancy can make dealing with “stubborn” areas such as these even more difficult. With body contouring procedures such as liposuction or a tummy tuck, Dr. Greenspun helps patients with realistic expectations to improve the appearance of their bodies.

Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that helps to flatten the abdomen, remove stretch marks and shape the waist by removing excess fat and flabby skin as well as by tightening the abdominal wall muscles. Both men and women who are dissatisfied with the appearance of their abdomens can benefit from abdominoplasty. If your concern is about paunchiness of the abdomen below the bellybutton, a mini-abdminoplasty or mini-tummy tuck may be the right procedure for you. With the mini-tummy tuck, both the scar and the recovery time are shorter than with the full abdominoplasty procedure. With either procedure, the incision is made within the "bikini" or "boxer" line to help hide the scar under your clothes or bathing suit. Abdominoplasty takes approximately two to five hours to complete. The procedure, which is often performed in our JCHAO certified office surgery center, can be performed with general anesthesia or local anesthesia and sedation. Recovery time ranges from one to six weeks. With attention to diet and regular exercise, results are long-lasting.
The body lift is performed to improve the appearance of the hips, thighs, lower back and buttocks. Excess skin and fat are removed from the torso and thighs to dramatically transform the mid and lower body. Depending on a patient's body size and shape, the procedure can take between three and seven hours under general anesthesia and involves a recovery period of two to six weeks. Extraordinary changes in appearance can be achieved for patients who have lost significant amounts of weight due to diet, exercise or bariatric surgery, or for those who have loose and inelastic skin. This procedure is sometimes combined with other procedures such as abdominoplasty, breast lift, facelift, or arm lift surgery to achieve harmonious proportions.

One of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures, liposuction sculpts the body by removing undesirable fat from areas such as the abdomen, waist, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, neck and upper arms. The technique is especially effective in addressing areas of the body that have not responded well to diet and exercise. Liposuction can take anywhere from one to five hours depending on the amount of fat being removed. Liposuction is highly effective and can be done with just a few tiny incisions placed in inconspicuous areas. There are several different methods of liposuction that can be used and Dr. Greenspun will work with you to determine which technique is most appropriate.
After substantial weight loss or simply from the effects of aging, the skin of the upper arms can become inelastic, loose and flabby. Arm lifting can be done to remove excess skin and fat. For some patients, brachioplasty may be combined with liposuction to achieve optimal arm contour.

After bariatric or gastric bypass surgery many patients lose significant amounts of weight. Unfortunately, stretched and inelastic skin hangs loosely over the slimmer body masking the improvements of weight loss. Post-bariatric plastic surgery combines reconstructive and cosmetic techniques that allow Dr. Greenspun to tighten, lift and contour sagging areas for a more attractive and slimmer appearance. Patients may choose to treat the arms, breasts, abdomen, buttocks, thighs, neck and face.
Dr. Greenspun has published numerous articles and delivered scientific lectures on plastic surgery after massive weight loss, and works with you to develop a treatment plan that addresses all of your concerns.
Some insurance carriers may cover the expense of post-bariatric reconstructive procedures. Furthermore, on April 2, 2002, the IRS announced a new policy (IRS Ruling 202-19) that states that "Obesity is medically accepted to be a disease in its own right." Though you must check with your accountant or tax expert, it may be possible that treatment for obesity can be claimed as a medical deduction.
