Dr. David T. Greenspunis a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon specializing in microsurgical perforator flap breast reconstruction. He practices in New York City and Greenwich, Connecticut and is actively pursuing clinical research in perforator flap surgery. With the help of radiologists at Montefiore Medical Center, he helped develop techniques that use Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to image the tiny blood vessels of the abdominal wall before DIEP or SIEA flap surgery. Working with radiologists at the Weill Medical College- Cornell University, he helped develop protocols that allow surgeons to use MRI, before surgery, to study the blood vessels used in various perforator flaps including DIEP/SIEA, GAP, LAP and TUG flaps. Unlike CT-scans, which can also be used to image perforator flap blood vessels before surgery, MRI scans do not expose women to radiation and its potentially harmful effects. These protocols are now used routinely by Dr. Greenspun and other perforator flap surgeons to help identify the best blood vessels for a particular patient’s reconstruction and reduce the time it takes to perform these delicate microsurgical procedures.
Dr. Greenspun has presented his research at national and international meetings and has authored numerous papers in peer-reviewed journals, including the , and . He lectures regularly in the United States and abroad about perforator flap breast reconstruction.
Dr. Greenspun received a Bachelor of Science degree with Distinction from McGill University in Montreal. Subsequently, he received a Fonds de recherche en santé du Québec grant to conduct advanced research at McGill and the Montreal Neurological Institute; he was awarded a Master of Science degree for this work. Dr. Greenspun returned to his native United States and received his Doctorate of Medicine degree with High Honors from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey where he was admitted to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society.
Dr. Greenspun trained in general surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and received his training in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine-Montefiore Medical Center. He is the recipient of the Leo M. Davidoff Society Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Teaching of Medical Students from the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Montefiore Medical Center. Dr. Greenspun is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, the only Board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties to certify plastic surgeons, and is a member of several medical societies including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. He holds clinical appointments at numerous New York City hospitals including the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, Roosevelt Hospital and Montefiore Medical Center as well as Greenwich Hospital in Greenwich, Connecticut.
